"I can’t start describing the suffering we are going through, from the dust or the cars that dart between our tents, life is awful, I hope they would find us a camp to put us in. We don’t want anything from them, just to shelter us in a safe place where we can protect our kids. This is what we want.”

"This is us living in the middle of the street. From this side there are cars and from this side there are cars. We don’t sleep at night because of the sound of trucks or water trucks when they pass by. This is how we are suffering, I have asthma, and this dust and atmosphere and sand (is not good). This is my daughter, she has an eye condition. This dust is not good for her either but what can I do. I used to protect her before the war, but now I can’t.”

STORYLINE:
Tents now stretch across nearly every corner of Gaza City, replacing bombed-out buildings and neighborhoods with makeshift shelters made of tarps and plastic sheeting.

Many are marked with the logos of UN agencies or other aid organizations.

Clotheslines crisscross between tents, draped with laundry drying in the dust.

Khamis Kitnani, a displaced man, sits outside his tent pitched in the middle of the road.

“I can’t start describing the suffering we are going through — from the dust or the cars that dart between our tents — life is awful, Kitani said.

“I hope they would find us a camp to put us in. We don’t want anything from them; just to shelter us in a safe place, where we can protect our kids. This is what we want,” he added.

Pointing to both sides of the street, Umm Mohammad said, “This is us living in the middle of the street. From this side there are cars and from this side there are cars. We don’t sleep at night because of the sound of trucks or water trucks when they pass by. This is how we are suffering”.

She sits flanked by her young daughters at the entrance of their tent.

“I have asthma, and this dust and atmosphere and sand (is not good). This is my daughter, she has an eye condition. This dust is not good for her either but what can I do. I used to protect her before the war, but now I can’t,” she said.

The Israel-Hamas war began when Palestinian militants stormed into Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, killing some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and abducting 251.

Hamas is still holding 58 hostages, around a third of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals.

Israel’s military campaign has killed over 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which does not say how many of the dead were civilians or combatants.
