STORYLINE:
Hong Kong again saw no mass commemoration of the anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown on Wednesday, with no sign of the candlelit vigils that once drew tens of thousands to Victoria Park.

The vigils came to an end in 2020 amid the enforcement of strict national security measures and the COVID pandemic.

Scores of police were patrolling Victoria Park Wednesday, where instead a small fair was offering food and other products, with no mention of what happened in Beijing on June 4, 36 years ago.

In recent years, Hong Kong authorities have removed monuments and books that recorded the event.

This week, a reporter asked local leader Chief Executive John Lee if people can commemorate the June 4 anniversary, but Lee did not directly answer, saying only that “any activity on any day must be in accordance with the law.”
