“After six tumultuous months, South Korea has a new president. Liberal firebrand Lee Jae Myung was elected early this morning and is now being inaugurated in the building behind me. This is the National Assembly. The parliament. The same building Lee and other lawmakers elbowed their way into after the December 3 martial law declaration by former president Yoon Suk Yeol. That night convulsed the nation and eventually ended Yoon’s presidency. Lee is now leader of a divided country. Conservatives fear he will distance South Korea from traditional ally Washington and pursue hasty reconciliation with rival North Korea. An urgent task is the establishment of ties with Donald Trump who has threatened South Korea with deep tariffs. Lee’s party controls parliament and so he will presumably pursue a raft of liberal policies. Many here are hoping the peaceful, orderly election is a sign of health for South Korea’s democracy after mass protests following the martial law decree and Yoon’s impeachment.”

STORYLINE:
South Korea’s new President Lee Jae-myung said he’ll pursue dialogue with North Korea while bolstering a trilateral partnership with the U.S. and Japan, during his inaugural address after taking office Wednesday.

He said that his government will deal with potential North Korean aggression with “a strong deterrence” based on the solid South Korea-U.S. military alliance.

But added he would also leave the door open for dialogue with North Korea and establish peace on the Korean Peninsula.

He said he’ll pursue pragmatic diplomacy and boost a trilateral Seoul-Washington-Tokyo cooperation based on the South Korea-U.S. alliance.

Lee won a snap election Tuesday for a five-year term.
