“The bird flu case is from a zoo here in Brasilia, it’s a wild animal, like 168 other cases that have happened in Brazil in the last two years, so there are no restrictions. Twenty one countries fully restricted Brazilian poultry imports. It’s a small percentage. Obviously, there are big buyers in this small percentage: China, Mexico, and the European Union. We are already in negotiations to reduce restrictions. Our strategy is to deal with it as quickly as possible.”

STORYLINE:
Brazil on Wednesday confirmed a new case of bird flu had been discovered at a zoo in the country’s capital.
Speaking to reporters Agriculture Minister, Carlos Fávaro, said the case was the 169th reported in wild animals in Brazil over the past two years.
As there had been no contamination of animals used for commercial purposes, he said no restrictions were being put in place on animal products in the area.
The case is the third confirmed case of bird flu in Brazil in 2025, following earlier detections at a commercial poultry farm and a zoo in the south of the country.
Brazil, one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of poultry, confirmed in early May the country’s first bird flu outbreak on a commercial farm in Rio Grande do Sul state.
The Agriculture Minister also stated that the 28-day observation window will end in 14 days, and the country can regain its disease-free status if there are no cases in commercial farms.
