We are taking this up again and intensifying these discussions. I can only summarize that again, I am extremely satisfied with the visit. We’ll see each other twice, once at the G7 summit in Canada in two weeks, then immediately afterwards for the NATO summit in the Hague. So we’re going to have several opportunities to talk in short succession. Today, we have laid a foundation for very good, personal, but also politically effective discussions."
7. Merz walking away after speaking to reporters
STORYLINE:
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House Thursday laid a foundation for both personal and ‘politically effective’ discussions.
Speaking to reporters at Washington’s National Mall after their meeting, Merz said he was "extraordinarily happy with the visit" and that the two leaders "get along well on the personal level.” Adding that he is very much looking forward to more talks with Trump at the upcoming G7 and NATO summits.
Thursday’s meeting was the first time the two leaders sat down in person, and Merz left the public portion unscathed as he successfully avoided the kind of made-for-TV confrontation in the Oval Office that befell other world leaders such as Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Cyril Ramaphosa, the president of South Africa.
