"Honestly, we’re living under pressure from the settlers and their attacks on us. We’re not even allowed to let our livestock out of the house. And if we do, it’s dangerous, they took some of our livestock. They bring donkeys and chase our sheep far away. They use tractors to scare us. One of them came on his horse, opened our water tank, makes it flow into the valley. These are all tactics to force us out of the area. Sixty percent of the people have sold their herds because settlers keep stealing them. Someone who had 300 heads of livestock sold them—he said, ‘before settlers steal them, I’d rather sell them and invest in something else.’ That’s why the number of livestock has decreased, and that affects the market. when the quantities of something decreases the price increases and when the quantities increase the price decreases."

10. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ibrahim Al-Qadi, Director of the Consumer Protection Department at the Palestinian Ministry of Economy: ++STARTS ON PREVIOUS SHOT; PARTLY OVERLAID WITH SHOTS 11 TO 13++
"The purchasing power of the Palestinian consumer has significantly declined. Today, the market for meat—especially lamb and goat—has dropped to only about 20% of the normal daily consumption rate in Palestine. There’s a real decrease, and one of the main reasons is the sharp rise in meat prices. At the same time, we have around 160,000 unemployed people, and due to deductions in clearance revenues, it has reflected negatively on the public employees who are only receiving about 70% of their salaries. As a result, the entire Palestinian economy shrinking by roughly 28%, according to official figures."

STORYLINE:
As Eid al-Adha approaches, livestock prices in West Bank have risen significantly while the ability of many Palestinians to afford sacrificial animals in the Israeli-occupied territory has declined.

This economic strain comes in light of the war in Gaza, which erupted after Hamas-led militants stormed out of the Gaza Strip into nearby Israel on Oct. 7, 2023.

The attack killed some 1,200 people, most of them civilians. Israel’s military campaign has killed over 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to the Gaza Health Ministry, which does not say how many of the dead were civilians or combatants.

Ibrahim Al-Qadi, Director of the Consumer Protection Department at the Palestinian Ministry of Economy, explained that many Israeli farms halted operations due to labor shortages after October 7. This in turn triggered a sharp rise in demand for livestock on the Israeli side.

The West Bank has seen a surge in settler violence since the start of the war in Gaza.
