LEADIN:
Excited gaming fans have been queuing outside stores in Tokyo as Nintendo’s much-anticipated Switch 2 finally went on sale.
Many of those waiting to collect their prized console had secured their devices through a competitive lottery system, others had even taken the morning off work to queue.
STORYLINE:
Excitement built in Tokyo as customers lined up before dawn to collect their pre-ordered Nintendo Switch 2 consoles.
The long-awaited successor to the original hybrid gaming system is now officially available in Japan.
Queues formed outside major electronics retailers hours before doors opened – with some customers arriving before sunrise.
To meet demand, Nintendo used a competitive lottery system for sales.
In Japan alone, it received more than 2.2 million applications.
Outside the official draw, some retailers also ran their own lotteries to give fans another chance to secure a unit.
Koji Takahashi was one of the lucky ones.
After missing out on Nintendo’s main draw, he was selected in a second-round lottery held by a major chain.
He arrived four hours early to be first in line – and to try to pick up a limited-edition accessory before it sold out.
He says: “I am very sorry for those who weren’t successful in the lottery.”
Takahashi continues: “But I also had tough time getting this far so I hope they forgive me!”
Inside, customers made their way to the cashiers to collect their orders.
Some headed straight to demo stations to try the console out in-store.
Yusuke Kuwanou was among those collecting his pre-order on launch morning.
Yoshikazu Sakuma also secured a unit after several unsuccessful attempts.
