‘Oceans are not for sale’, says French President Emmanuel Macron | BBC News

French President Emmanuel Macron said a treaty to protect international waters is on track for ratification in January.

Macron, who is hosting a global summit on the oceans in Nice, said this would give the world an international framework to regulate and administer the high seas.

There is increasing interest in extracting precious minerals from what are called metallic "nodules" that naturally occur on the seabed.

But marine scientists are concerned about the harm that could be caused.
