"We’re back, today, to square one, but it’s even worse than the first displacement. This displacement, we are suffering from the lack of water and suffering from starvation and the lack of food. We’re suffering from the lack of spaces that we can stay in. We’re suffering from everything because today we left behind everything we’ve built during the ceasefire period, including things we bought and had to leave behind. We left with nothing."

7. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Elham Khateeb, displaced woman: ++PARTIALLY OVERLAID BY SHOTS 8 TO 10++
"We and the neighbors had to evacuate because rockets started falling near the neighborhood we were in. My sister and I started moving so we could find space, but we found the streets unusually overcrowd. It’s as if we went back to the first days of the war, after we had already settled and set up a kitchen and toilet and a basic setting for us to stay in, but we left without our belongings. We looked right and left searching for a space to set up a tent but there was nothing. People have set up tents on the street. The situation is dire. I can’t describe to you the suffering people and their families are experiencing in the streets because of the lack of water and the lack of space. People have been thrown into the streets."

STORYLINE:
Palestinians in east and central Khan Younis are being displaced again and struggling to find shelter in crowded streets in the Muwasi area after the Israeli army issued evacuation orders on Monday.

Eslam al-Khateeb and 16 of his family members, including his wife and children, have been forced to stay in one tent after struggling to find room set up their shelter in Muwasi.

The 43-year-old said the situation was even worse than when they were displaced earlier in the war due to the lack of water, space, and food.

“We’re suffering from everything because we left behind everything we built during the ceasefire period, including things we bought,” he said.

His wife, Elham, said that they had to evacuate because rockets started falling near the neighborhood they were living in.

She said a significant number of people “have been thrown into the streets".

Israel has increased its operations in Gaza since it ended a ceasefire after Hamas in March after the militants refused to change the agreement to release more hostages sooner.

Israeli strikes have killed thousands of Palestinians since then, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Hamas-led militants killed around 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 251 people hostage in the October 7, 2023, attack into southern Israel that ignited the war.

They are still holding 58 hostages, a third of them believed to be alive, after most of the rest were released in ceasefire agreements or other deals.

Israel’s military campaign has killed more than 54,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, which doesn’t say how many of the dead were civilians or combatants.
