5. SOUND BITE (Urdu) Gulab Khan, labourer:
“I have seven children. I have to work hard to earn a livelihood in such extreme weather conditions. There is inflation and how can I feed my seven children with such inflation? And I am poor man earning Rs.5000 (18 US dollars) which is not sufficient for my children. It is difficult to survive with such minimum earnings. Thank God who is merciful. It is so hot here and I have to work in such heat as I have no other source of income to make ends meet.”

“There is problem of water shortage and power outages in the district, and it increases in summer. When the heat increases the demand for ice increases in three months of summer, and it is very difficult to do business due to frequent power shutdowns in the summer season.”

“It is impossible to live in Jacobabad where temperature rises to 50 degrees. Power outages are frequent in the summer season. Most of the people living in Jacobabad are poor like me and it is difficult to live in Jacobabad in summer, because there are power shut down issues in Jacobabad which increase three to six hours in the summer season.”

“The Jacobabad (weather) situation is getting worse due to heatwaves and temperature increases day by day. To control or mitigate the weather situation, one natural solution is vegetation or plantation while the other is engineering, or what we call it man-made, that is improving the infrastructure, making greener houses and raising awareness in people that heatwaves are so dangerous and it is a serious issue, heatstroke can be deadly.”

One of the world’s hottest cities is getting even hotter as summer begins.
Temperatures in Jacobabad can reach 50 degrees Celsius at this time of the year.
STORYLINE:
The people in Jacobabad know what to expect when summer arrives.
But that doesn’t make it any easier.
The city in Pakistan’s Sindh province regularly suffers under temperatures of more than 45 degrees Celsius, sometimes over 50 degrees Celsius.
Workers in the market try to protect themselves from this extreme weather with head coverings.
But they still have to work – there are bills to pay.
It’s the same for labourer Gulab Khan.
He works at a brick factory, exposed to the scorching sun in an open field.
With a family to support, he must do his job, no matter how hot it gets.
Jacobabad is one of the hottest cities in the world.
The situation is made worse by a lack of proper infrastructure.
Water supply problems and regular power outages make keeping cool a challenge.
But locals complain about the heat.
