5. SOUNDBITE (Spanish) Daniel Estombelo, leader of Peru’s Ministry of Culture workers’ union:
"They are staff who work in different archaeological parks. Last week, our colleagues who work on construction projects who were protesting were intimidated and threatened. The same thing happened to us. Today, they sent us memorandums. They have even filed police reports against us, but we are still here supporting this measure of struggle. If we are not heard by the minister (of Culture), we will radicalize our measure of struggle and go to Machu Picchu to make ourselves heard."

STORYLINE:
More than 800 workers from the various archaeological sites in the Cusco region of Peru protested Thursday and initiated a 24-hour strike in demand of better wages.
Some gathered in the Sacsayhuaman Archaeological Park, near to the regional capital Cusco, while others marched in the central square.
Parks were left without workers collecting toll fees and police were called in to guard the sites as tourists entered without paying.
Union leader, Daniel Estombelo, said that if the Ministry of Culture did not respond to workers demands they would extend their protest.
The union also denounced what they said had been precarious working conditions, breaches of agreements and wage inequality.
