China asked Ukrainian side to protect the legitimate rights and interests and ensure humanitarian treatment of Chinese nationals.”

STORYLINE:
China urged Guatemala to “make the right choice” on Friday after the Central American country’s president signaled his intent to strengthen ties with Taiwan during a recent visit to the island.
During a meeting Thursday with Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te, President Bernado Arevalo said Guatemala “shall continue to strengthen bilateral relations based on the solid foundations built in the past."
In Beijing, spokesperson Lin Jian of China’s Foreign Ministry called the efforts by Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party to strengthen diplomatic ties “self-deceiving tactics”. He reiterated that “Taiwan is an inalienable part of China’s territory."
China has been winning over Taiwan’s allies by offering big-tickets items such as highways, railways and stadiums in order to isolate Taiwan internationally and achieve its goal of “peacefully unifying” with the island it claims as its own.
China has steadily reduced the number of Taiwan’s diplomatic allies to just 12 after launching campaigns in the Caribbean and Central America.
Separately, Lin told media China has asked Ukraine to ensure humanitarian treatment of two Chinese nationals who were captured two months ago fighting alongside the Russian army in the eastern Donetsk region.
China has provided strong diplomatic support for Russia since Moscow launched its full-scale invasion to Ukraine in February 2022. Beijing has also offered an economic lifeline through the trade in energy and consumer goods.
Lin didn’t say what has happened to the two Chinese men since they were caught. He said China has urged its citizens to avoid conflict zones and “particularly avoid participating in the military operations of either side.”
