US orders ‘non-essential’ employees to leave Baghdad embassy | DW News

The United States has ordered non-essential employees to leave its embassy in the Iraqi capital Baghdad.

A State Department official said the decision was made after evaluating regional tensions. It comes as talks between the US and Iran over Tehran’s nuclear program appear to be faltering. US President Donald Trump has threatened to strike Iran if the talks fail. In response, Iran has threatened to target US military bases.

The embassy in Baghdad advised American citizens against travelling to Iraq, after President Trump said personnel were being moved out of the Middle East.
