"What I would say to world leaders today is very simple; you have a chance to unite together to really state your faith in multilateralism to protect the ocean and you have together support a deep sea moratorium and make it clear now and make clear during the next international seabed authority meeting that will take place in Jamaica in a few weeks. We count on you. You are the only one who have the power to take the decision to protect the deep sea. You’re the only one."

“What I say all the time, the ocean dies, we die, we don’t live on this planet with a dead ocean. And the ocean is in serious trouble. Since 1950 we lost 40 percent diminishment of phytoplankton in the sea. Phytoplankton provides 70% of the oxygen we breath. If Phytoplankton disappears from the sea, we die. It’s a simple as that. So, we have to do everything to protect the phytoplankton in the sea. And that means protecting biodiversity and making sure the ocean is clean to support life”.

“What we can say is that the Trump administration is here (in office) for a limited time. The treaty is here for a very long time, so we hope that one day the United States will be able to join this initiative, and it’s no bad thing that the Trump administration is not here to discuss the future of the oceans, because on the contrary, they are trying to speed up deep-sea mining. So, we urgently need the other countries to take responsibility and agree to protect the deep sea once and for all. The only solution is a moratorium on deep-sea mining”.

STORYLINE:
The third UN Ocean Conference opened on Monday as pressure mounts for nations to turn decades of promises into real protection for the sea.

The summit comes as just 2.7% of the ocean is effectively protected from destructive extractive activities, according to the non-profit Marine Conservation Institute.

That’s far below the target agreed under the “30×30” pledge to conserve 30% of land and sea by 2030.

Top of this year’s agenda is the ratification of the High Seas Treaty.

Adopted in 2023, the treaty would for the first time allow nations to establish marine protected areas in international waters, which cover nearly two-thirds of the ocean and are largely ungoverned.

“You are the only one who have the power to take the decision to protect the deep sea,” she said.
