STORYLINE:
The Chinese government on Monday defended its aircraft carrier’s sailing near Japan over the weekend.
The Japanese government confirmed that the Chinese carrier Liaoning, alongside two destroyers and a supply ship, sailed off the coast of Japan’s easternmost Minamitori Island in the Pacific Ocean Saturday.
The water is within Japan’s exclusive economic zone, and Japan’s Defense Ministry said it was the first time a Chinese aircraft carrier entered the area.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a daily news briefing in Beijing the warship’s activities “fully comply with international law and international practice.”
Tokyo said it will continue monitoring the developments.
