STORYLINE:
Thousands of pilgrims honored the Rocío Virgin, a Catholic icon of the Virgin Mary, in southern Spain on Monday.
The Virgin of El Rocío was carried by worshippers from a shrine and paraded through the streets of El Rocío during the annual event.
Venerating the Rocío Virgin has been a tradition since an icon was discovered near El Rocio, in the southern region of Andalusia, late in the 13th century.
The event has grown into one of world’s largest Catholic pilgrimages.
