5. SOUNDBITE (German) Friedrich Merz, German Chancellor:
"I would like to say on behalf of the federal government that all of Germany mourns with our neighbor Austria in this terrible hour."

7. SOUNDBITE (Dutch) Dick Schoof, Dutch Prime Minister:
"But let me also pause for a moment to reflect on the terrible tragic events in Graz as it was just mentioned by the chancellor. We are with the bereaved. And I also informed my colleague in Austria about this earlier today."

9. SOUNDBITE (German) Friedrich Merz, German Chancellor:
"The recent severe Russian attacks on Kyiv and other cities are once again assaults on the civilian population, once again grave war crimes, not military targets, but terror against civilians. Russia has deliberately and ruthlessly attacked the civilian population with numerous drones and cruise missiles. This was anything but a proportionate response to the very precise Ukrainian strikes against military airfields and infrastructure last week."

11. SOUNDBITE (German) Friedrich Merz, German Chancellor:
"Once again, it becomes evident that Russia is escalating instead of negotiating. Therefore, the federal government will continue to work with its partners to increase the sanctions pressure on Russia. Support for Kyiv and pressure on Moscow are both needed now to exert the necessary pressure so that real negotiations for a ceasefire can begin."

STORYLINE:
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz met with acting Dutch Prime Minister Dick Schoof at the Chancellery in Berlin on Tuesday, where the leaders discussed a school shooting in Austria earlier in the day and recent developments in Ukraine.
Both Merz and Schoof extended their condolences following the shooting in Graz, Austria.
"We are deeply shocked by this news that young people have been so suddenly torn from life," Merz said during a joint news conference.
Earlier on Tuesday, a former student opened fire at a school in Austria’s second-biggest city, killing at least nine people and wounding several others before taking his own life, authorities said.
During the meeting, Merz also condemned Russia’s latest wave of attacks on Kyiv and other Ukrainian cities, accusing Moscow of committing “the most serious war crimes.”
"Russia has deliberately and ruthlessly attacked the civilian population with numerous drones and cruise missiles," he said.
