(23 Jul 2003) MC CARTNEY PLAYS ROCK IN RIO -IN LISBON
Rock in Rio-Lisbon, billed as one of the world’s largest music festivals, got underway Friday and organizers said they expected 350,000 to attend the Lisbon event, with another 2 billion watching the six days of concerts on television.
Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney kicked off the festival, which runs over two weekends on May 28-30 and June 4-6 in the Portuguese capital. Other acts appearing at the festival, modeled on the original "Rock in Rio" concert that began in 1985, include Peter Gabriel, Britney Spears, Sting and hard rock band Metallica.
The event is being held in a Lisbon municipal park, where organizers have built a 200,000 square-meter "City of Rock".
Previous editions of the festival have sought to raise awareness of social problems and the Lisbon event’s slogan is "For a Better World".
Concert goers will be able to watch documentaries in a lecture theater and discuss world peace between gigs. United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan is expected to send a video message at the start of the festival and Portugal’s three main television networks will go silent for three minutes on Saturday to encourage reflection on social issues.
Security at the event is tight and 1,000 police and private security officers will guard the festival’s perimeter. Fans will run three security checks, including metal detectors, before being allowed into the festival. Portugal closed its borders with Spain this week to give added security against a possible terrorist threat during Rock in Rio and the Euro 2004 football championships beginning June 12.
