STORYLINE:
Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez met on Wednesday with a senior Chinese official to strengthen bilateral relations and what they referred to as a "community of shared future" amid a severe economic crisis on the island that seeks allies in response to increased U.S. sanctions.
Rodriguez met for the second time with Qiu Xiaoqi, China’s special representative for Latin American Affairs, who has spent the last two weeks in the Caribbean nation trying to learn more about the island.
Recently, both heads of state met in Moscow and reached new agreements on the bilateral agenda.
"Now our task is to implement these important agreed-upon conclusions," the official from the Asian nation told reporters as he greeted Rodríguez.
Chinese President Xi Jinping and his Cuban counterpart, Miguel Díaz-Canel, met in Moscow—the island’s other key political partner—in mid-May.
The leader of the Asian nation sharply criticized the U.S. sanctions against Cuba, condemning what he regarded as an interference in the island’s sovereignty.
"We have reaffirmed the political will of the top leadership of the party and the state and government of both countries to accelerate the construction of the community of the shared future in the bilateral order, which is the first in Latin America." said Rodríguez.
The mechanism will allow "advancing towards a greater integration and interconnection of Sino-Cuban societies and the confrontation of complex global challenges," said the island’s foreign minister, without providing further details about the mechanism.
The 64-year-old political alliance between Cuba and China has been strengthened in key sectors, such as Asian donations for infrastructure projects like photovoltaic parks, amid a severe energy crisis on the island.
Additionally, rice deliveries, a basic staple in the population’s food supply, have also increased.
