New York – 11 June 2025
1. SOUNDBITE (English) Michael R. Sisak, The Associated Press:
"Harvey Weinstein has been convicted again, guilty of one count and not guilty of another at his MeToo retrial in New York City. It was an extraordinary day in court. Jurors returning a verdict on two of the three counts against Weinstein while remaining divided on that last count. The jury convicted Weinstein of criminal sex act for forcibly performing oral sex on Miriam Haley, a former TV and movie production assistant back in 2006. Weinstein was convicted of the same crime at his first trial in 2020. But the verdict was overturned last year on appeal, which then set up this retrial. As they prepared to bring the case, prosecutors added a previously uncharged allegation. They were retrying him on those other charges, but they added one that hadn’t been part of that original case. That was the allegation that Weinstein committed the same crime, criminal sex act, with Kaja Sokola, a Polish model, also in 2006. Sokola gave at times tearful testimony at Weinstein’s retrial. But on Wednesday, the jury said that it had found Weinstein not guilty of assaulting her. So guilty on one count, but not guilty on another, and a third count still pending. Weinstein’s conviction nonetheless could put the 73-year-old ex-movie mogul behind bars for decades. He’s also facing a 16-year prison sentence in a similar case in California, though he’s also appealing that verdict. Here in New York, the jury of seven women and five men delivered what’s known as a partial verdict on their fifth day of deliberations. They’ll return on Thursday to continue weighing that last count, which is third degree rape relating to an allegation that Weinstein assaulted an aspiring actor by the name of Jessica Mann back in 2013. Weinstein’s conviction and the acquittal on that other count capped a wild day of deliberations. The jury foreperson complained again that he was being bullied by other jurors. Weinstein’s lawyer then asked for a mistrial, and Weinstein himself addressed the court while jurors were out of the room. He implored the judge to end the case without a verdict. He said, "my life is on the line, and you know what? It’s not fair. It’s time, it’s time. It’s time to say this trial is over." Just minutes later, the jury came back into the room and delivered its verdict. Afterward, Weinstein sat at the defense table as jurors walked by. He had his hands clasped to his chin, watching them go. The judge advised him and his lawyers not to make any comments until that last charge is decided. Jury deliberations on that resume on Thursday."

STORYLINE:
Former movie mogul Harvey Weinstein was convicted Wednesday of one of the top charges in his sex crimes retrial but acquitted of another, and jurors were as yet unable to reach a verdict on a third charge.
The split verdict meted out a measure of vindication to his accusers and prosecutors — but also to Weinstein — in the landmark case.
The partial verdict came after an extraordinary day in which the jury foreperson indicated he felt bullied and Weinstein himself urged the judge to halt the trial, declaring: “It’s just not fair.”
“My life is on the line, and you know what? It’s not fair,” the former Hollywood heavy-hitter declared after making an unusual request to address the court. “It’s time, it’s time, it’s time, it’s time to say this trial is over.”
Weinstein, 73, denies sexually assaulting or raping anyone.
