4. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Hazem Abu Linda, displaced man:
"We go for two reasons: first, because we are unable (to buy) because the prices are high, and because of the monopoly of the merchants, and the goods are very expensive. If the merchants cooperated with the community and lowered the prices, no one would go (to the American aid distribution points). And if someone goes after that, everyone will receive it (the aid) smoothly, because the price of the thing is negligible. 90 percent of those who go take (the aid) to sell it, and 10 percent are the ones who return in order to feed their children."

6. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Mahmoud al-Hindi, from Khan Younis:
"My children cried last night because they wanted dinner, and by God there is no dinner in the house. I have a sick child who is 4-years-old. They are crying for me, wanting to have dinner, so I was forced to go out there to the aid point to bring it to my children. In front of us is shooting, injuries and martyrs. We returned with nothing. We hope to live with dignity. We hope that someone will stand with us. They said, "Come here, there is aid. We want someone to stand with us. We want countries to stand with us. May God deal with the people who refuse to stand with us."

9. SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abdel Rahman Al-Shaer, from Khan Younis:
"I went six times, and I never received aid, not once. and we come to buy what people bring. The prices are outrageous. You cannot buy anything. In fact, we do not have money to buy."

STORYLINE:
Scores of people returned to Khan Younis on Wednesday from distribution centres in Rafah, with some carrying aid parcels and boxes on their shoulders.

One elderly man with an injured leg was carried on a cart.

Meanwhile, many came back empty-handed, including Abdel Rahman Al-Shaer, who said he went there six times and always came back with nothing.

He said people bring items to sell in the market at high prices that he can’t afford because he doesn’t have any money.

Hazem Abu Linda, who came back with a food parcel that he carried on his back, said that most people who go to the centres resell the aid they take and that if merchants hadn’t monopolized the markets and sold food at affordable prices, then no one would go to these centres.

“I have children who were screaming today because they wanted to eat, but we have nothing. I have a sick 4-year-old as well. So I was forced to go there for the first time to get food for my children. I went there and saw in front of me shootings, injured people, and martyrs. We went home empty-handed,” said Mahmoud al-Hindi.

127 people have been killed and hundreds wounded since the rollout of a new food distribution system last month, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

Israel and the United States say the new system is designed to circumvent Hamas, but it has been rejected by the U.N. and major aid groups.

Experts have warned that Israel’s blockade and ongoing military campaign have put Gaza at risk of famine.
