5. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Yoshitomo Nara, artist:
"It (Hayward Gallery) is a building with a very intricate, interesting, and organic structure. So, when I thought about how to install my 40 years of work into this space, I decided not to do it in chronological order. Instead, I wanted to place pieces of different sizes and different materials side by side. I thought it would be interesting to create an exhibition that’s not lined up in a single row, but in more organic way where some works are installed higher, some lower, some large works next to small ones, and so on."
6. Various of installation "No Means No", 2006
7. Various of installation "Fountain of Life" 2001/2014/2022
8. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Yoshitomo Nara, artist:
"My work is really easy to understand. It’s something that both children and adults can grasp and perspectives depend on their age. I think kids might take it in very superficially, almost like they’re looking at cartoons or illustrations. For adults with deeper life experiences, I think they would see various layers within the paintings according to their age. So how they perceive my art would be different according to each person’s experiences or emotions. If you look at the same painting every day, it will show a completely different face each time. So, rather than saying, “I want you to see my work in this way,” I’m more interested in hearing how people from children to adults will view my work."
9. Installation "Peace of Mind", 2010
10. Exhibition

13. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Yoshitomo Nara, artist:
"After that (Japan’s 2011 earthquake disasters), my themes changed without noticing. It feels like sulky kids grew up a little bit with rather merciful expressions to their look. My style shifted from just venting my frustrations to something that could offer hope to others, which happened unintentionally and naturally. I think that’s not about the paintings evolving, but about humans evolving. It made me feel like that’s what it really means to grow as a person."

15. Close of "No Nukes", 1998
16. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Yoshitomo Nara, artist:
"In America, for example, as an extension of the Civil Rights movement, there were many musicians against the Vietnam War, from folk songs to rock music, using the loudness of rock music to protest. I think Jimi Hendrix is probably the most famous of them all. That’s what I grew up seeing, so those "anti-war" and “no nukes” sentiments just naturally got absorbed into me – they became part of who I am. So rather than feeling some sense of mission, those messages just come out of me naturally."
