STORYLINE:
China reiterated its position of opposing U.S. tariffs after President Donald Trump’s most recent comments about high-level U.S.-China trade talks in London.

Trump said China will make it easier for American industry to obtain much-needed magnets and rare earth minerals, clearing the way for talks to continue between the world’s two biggest economies.

In return, Trump said, the U.S. will stop efforts to revoke the visas of Chinese national on US college campuses.

The Commerce Ministry of China didn’t confirm or deny what Trump described as a “deal”.

Spokesperson He Yadong said China and US in London reached “a principled consensus” on implementing the understanding reached between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping during their phone talks on June 5.

He said both teams will keep communications to “reduce misunderstandings” and “promote the stable and long-term development of China-US economic and trade relations”.

The spokesperson also said China has approved “a certain number” of rare earth-related items without offering more details.

China in April introduced new export licensing requirements on certain rare earth elements that are needed by European and American companies in high-tech manufacturing.
