STORYLINE:
Associated Press footage showed charred rubble and construction equipment working at the site where a London-bound airplane crashed five minutes after taking off in Ahmedabad, India on Thursday.
The Air India passenger plane with more than 240 people on board crashed Thursday in the northwestern city, the airline and local media reported.
Visuals on local television channels showed smoke billowing from the crash site near the airport.
Faiz Ahmed Kidwai, the director general of the directorate of civil aviation, has told The Associated Press that Air India flight AI 171, a Boeing 787, crashed into a residential area called Meghani Nagar five minutes after taking off at 1:38 p.m. local time.
The plane was bound for London Gatwick Airport and was carrying 169 Indians, 53 Britons, seven Portuguese and one Canadian, Air India said.
The Ahmedabad city police commissioner told the AP there appear to be no survivors from the crash.
