We need a lot more people here, and I’m seeing that there are more people now, still we need everyone to join us, so well, at least we are hopeful."

STORYLINE:
Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, Argentina’s former president and central figure of the Peronist movement, is awaiting a judicial decision on her request to serve a 6-year prison sentence under house arrest.

Her legal team argues that her age (72), former presidential status, and a failed assassination attempt in 2022 warrant additional protective measures.

Meanwhile, supporters and union members gathered outside her residence to show solidarity.

The federal court has given her five business days to appear and be officially notified of where she must serve her sentence. However, prosecutors are demanding her immediate arrest.

Fernández has also requested to serve her sentence without an electronic ankle monitor, arguing that her security detail is sufficient to ensure compliance. Her lawyers emphasize that she has always cooperated with judicial procedures.

The Supreme Court rejected her appeal challenging the legitimacy of the evidence used in the 2022 trial, which found her guilty of orchestrating a massive fraud involving the irregular allocation of public contracts to a businessman with ties to her family.

The conviction disqualifies Fernández from running in the upcoming provincial elections in September.
