STORYLINE:
Three police officers died on Wednesday in Bolivia and several others were injured, one of them seriously, during an operation by security forces to reopen a road in the southern part of the country.
The demonstrators blocking main roads are supporters of former President Evo Morales, and have been protesting for several days against his disqualification as a presidential candidate.
Speaking to the media, President Luis Arce said police operations will continue "until the government’s objectives of providing the Bolivian people with efficient roads, pacifying and bringing order" are achieved.
He also confirmed the three deaths and said he will not resign, following a meeting with military leaders and his security ministers to evaluate further actions.
These are the first reported deaths after 10 days of roadblocks in various parts of the country, organized by supporters of former President Morales.
The roadblocks have stranded dozens of vehicles carrying food and fuel in six of Bolivia’s nine regions and, according to the government, have caused losses exceeding $100 million.
