STORYLINE:
China called on all parties to “avoid further escalation of tensions” after Israel launched a major attack with strikes early Friday that set off explosions in the Iranian capital of Tehran.

“China is paying great attention to Israel’s attack on Iran and is deeply worried about the serious consequences that may result from the relevant actions,” Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said at a daily news briefing in Beijing.

China also offered to “play a constructive role” in de-escalating the situation.

Israel’s attack comes as tensions have escalated over Iran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program, which Israel sees as a threat to its existence.
