STORYLINE:
1. Israel launched attacks on multiple targets inside Iran early this morning. What is China’s comment on this?
China is paying great attention to Israel’s attack on Iran and is deeply worried about the serious consequences that may result from the relevant actions. China opposes any infringement on Iran’s sovereignty, security, and territorial integrity, and opposes actions that escalate tensions and expand the conflict. The sudden escalation of the regional situation is not in the interest of any party. China calls on all relevant parties to do more to promote regional peace and stability and to avoid further escalation of tensions. China is willing to play a constructive role in helping to cool down the situation.
2. Iran has repeatedly threatened that if it is attacked again, it will block the Strait of Hormuz. This is very likely to happen after Israel’s attack. Does China support Iran’s blockade of the Strait as a retaliatory measure?
I will not comment on hypothetical questions. The renewed escalation of the regional situation is not in the interest of any party. We call on all relevant parties to do more to promote regional peace and stability and to avoid further escalation of tensions. China is also willing to continue playing a constructive role in this regard.
3. At the invitation of President Tokayev of the Republic of Kazakhstan, President Xi Jinping will visit Astana, Kazakhstan from June 16 to 18 to attend the second China–Central Asia Summit. Could you introduce the main arrangements and China’s expectations for this visit?
This will be the first time the China–Central Asia Summit is held in a Central Asian country. President Xi Jinping will attend the summit and deliver a keynote speech. He will exchange views with Central Asian leaders on the development achievements of the China–Central Asia mechanism, mutually beneficial cooperation within the framework, and international and regional hotspot issues, and jointly participate in related activities. During the summit, President Xi will also hold bilateral meetings with Central Asian leaders to provide top-level design for the development of China’s relations with the five Central Asian countries.
We believe that through this summit, China and the five Central Asian countries will further consolidate the foundation of mutual trust, build consensus on cooperation, deepen strategic alignment, and enhance cooperation in various fields, injecting more positive energy into building a closer China–Central Asia community with a shared future.
4. On June 12 local time, a Boeing 787 passenger plane crashed in India, possibly causing more than 200 deaths. What is China’s comment?
China noted this unfortunate incident. President Xi Jinping has sent messages of condolence to Indian President Droupadi Murmu, King Charles III of the United Kingdom, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, expressing deep condolences on behalf of the Chinese government and people to the victims, and extending sincere sympathies to the families of the victims and the injured, wishing the injured a speedy recovery. Premier Li Qiang also sent messages of condolence to Indian Prime Minister Modi and British Prime Minister Starmer.
5. At the invitation of Premier Li Qiang, Prime Minister Luxon of New Zealand will pay an official visit to China from June 17 to 20. What are China’s expectations?
