1. SOUNDBITE (English) Joe Federman, The Associated Press:
"Israelis have been woken up by air raid sirens as the government announces a military campaign, unprecedented military campaign striking Iranian nuclear targets. The sirens went off across the country here in Israel as a preemptive measure. The government has ordered people to remain indoors and avoid large gatherings and so forth because they are expecting some sort of Iranian reprisals. Now Israel says, the military says it is striking dozens of targets inside Iran. These include attacks on the nuclear program, as well as other military targets and even military commanders. The army isn’t giving too many details at this point, but Israel, of course, has long threatened to strike Iran’s nuclear program. The military says that Iran has continued to develop its nuclear program and is close, closer than ever to possessing nuclear weapons. In fact, it says Iran has accumulated enough materials to build 15 nuclear weapons within short time. So, the country is saying, or the Israeli government and army is saying, that really it believes it had no choice but to strike right now. This came, of course, as the US is conducting negotiations with Iran over that nuclear program. Israel is not saying whether this attack was coordinated with the Americans, but they do say that they have a very good relationship with their partners, so they’re hinting at some sort of notice or cooperation or coordination with the Americans. We are expecting a long night. The army says that this operation is expected to last for some time, so we will see how things unfold in the coming hours and even the coming days."

STORYLINE:
Israel attacked Iran’s capital early Friday, with explosions booming across Tehran.
An Israeli military official said that the Israeli Air Force targeted Iranian nuclear and military sites, without identifying them. The official spoke to journalists on condition of anonymity to discuss the ongoing operation.
Air-raid sirens preventatively rang out in Israel.
The attack comes as tensions have reached new heights over Tehran’s rapidly advancing nuclear program.
The Board of Governors at the International Atomic Energy Agency for the first time in 20 years on Thursday censured Iran over it not working with its inspectors.
Iran immediately announced it would establish a third enrichment site in the country and swap out some centrifuges for more advanced ones.
Israel for years has warned it will not allow Iran to build a nuclear weapon, something Tehran insists it doesn’t want — though officials there have repeatedly warned it could.
