STORYLINE:
Israeli police closed Al-Aqsa compound to the public, bracing for a potential Iranian counterattack following its attack on Tehran early Friday.
Only the guards and employees of the mosque would be present for traditional Friday prayers, the site’s custodian said Friday.
The Waqf, the Islamic endowment which administers the site, said Israel has banned public gatherings.
The call to prayer will sound as usual.
The mosque is the third holiest site for Muslims, and is located on the holiest site for Jews, who refer to it as the Temple Mount.
The promenade in front of the Western Wall in Jerusalem, the holiest site where Jews can pray, stood empty Friday as Israel banned large public gatherings.
The Western Wall Heritage foundation said prayers would be scaled down and held indoors, in onsite tunnels.
Israel attacked Iran early Friday, saying it was targeting the country’s nuclear facilities.
The military said it had intercepted most of over 100 drones launched by Iran toward Israel in response, but the country was still on high alert Friday afternoon.
