2. SOUNDBITE (English) Geri Halliwell-Horner, author/recording artist – on why there’s such a huge gap between her children’s books and this one:
"First of all, it took me longer to write. I would say from the start was nine years and it’s such a different medium. And I would say the shape of it, the characters remain the same, but I just… it was like a baptism of fire. Writing a novel of that length really, it was hard. I had to really learn as I went. So… and then as a writer, you got to have that discipline and life stuff happens."

4. SOUNDBITE (English) Geri Halliwell-Horner, author/recording artist – on learning to write a long book:
"So I gave it to other writers to read, to give me honest feedback. William Boyd – ok, he wrote ‘Any Human Heart’ who is incredible. And it was like giving Humpty-Dumpty to Beethoven right? At the level when I first gave it to him, he told me to rewrite the whole thing in the third person past tense, right? Because I was in the first person, present tense and I felt in my heart it was good. The characters are right, but I was like, really struggling. So I rewrote the whole thing and it was a game changer. And for him to give me that time, I’m forever grateful. There’s all different things that I had to learn on the way so to speak. Like another writer told me, ‘You must keep your phone out the room.’ Then I read this book by Stephen King. It’s called ‘How to Write,’ and it says, ‘Be in a dark room.’"

8. SOUNDBITE (English) Geri Halliwell-Horner, author/recording artist – on how she got the idea for the book:
"I felt like the world needs a new hero. There’s plenty of them. But I think we need someone as unairbrushed, not perfect. And what about finding the courage you never knew you had? How about that? And so, you know, she was always with me and then developing the characters around. And then I thought would be really interesting to lean on, you know, so this is a school that embodies values of a great person from history. And so first of all, came to me was Queen Elizabeth I. But then I thought, ‘What about Anne Boleyn?’ Anne Boleyn. Now if you think about Anne Boleyn, she has, you know, this history with her that people go, ‘Oh, don’t pick her.’ I actually, someone said to me, ‘Don’t pick her.’ And I thought, ‘Why?’ And then I unpacked it. And I thought actually maybe she was shamed for being smart. You know, Henry VIII chopped her head off. I was like, actually, if that was now, he would have been Me Too-ed, and put in prison right? That was not very nice. And so can you imagine Queen Elizabeth I, her parents, you know, that background is bound to have left an impression on her choices. So I thought what about if she builds this school in honor of her mother that reflects how amazing she is?"
