STORYLINE:
In a control room in Kabul, Interior Ministry spokesman Abdul Mateen Qani said at least 100,000 cameras prevent crime in the city.
Almost the entire capital is under surveillance and the country is the safest it’s been for decades, he added.
The cameras in the control room have zoom capabilities ranging from 5 to 8 kilometers, even up to 12 kilometers.
The zoom is “so clear and precise” that facial recognition is possible and car license plates can be read fully, said Qani.
The government is courting foreign investment to develop the country and boost its economy.
It’s seeking to capitalize on Afghanistan’s mineral resources and development opportunities, and trying to project strength and peace.
While there is less violence since the Taliban shifted from insurgency to governance and foreign troops left; militants affiliated with the Islamic State group still carry out attacks, mostly targeting the minority Shiite community and the administration.
