STORYLINE:
Opening up their demonstration to the tune of "War Pigs" by Black Sabbath, several hundred people gathered on the Mississippi State Capitol lawn in Jackson to signal their support for a wide variety of causes: Palestine, the LGBTQ community, immigrants and democracy itself.
Some people had tinfoil crowns perched atop their heads. Others held signs that invited nearby drivers to join in voicing their dissatisfaction with the Trump administration with messages such as "Honk if you never text war plans."
"It feels to me like we are losing the thread of democracy in our country—that that it is unraveling before our eyes. Each step that the administration takes appears to take some strand and pull it out of the weave, and I’m afraid that it will take so much time and so much effort if we can to even recover the loses that we are, that we are experiencing," said Melissa Johnson, who drove an hour-and-a-half to protest in Jackson.
Before protesters marched around the capitol, organizers kicked off the event by thanking the capitol police for shutting down nearby streets. The organizers’ gratitude was met by cheers from the crowd.
