“We think it’s very important for this moment of protest of no kings, for the chicken to be in Paris. In particular the Bastille, because of the symbolism of rising up and resisting tyranny and no kings."

10. SOUNDBITE (English) Ada Shen, Paris No Kings protest organizer:
“I think Americans everywhere should be very concerned about what is happening in the United States. This is a very dangerous moment. So we are exercising our right to free speech here in Europe while we still have it. We can see with the things that are happening in Los Angeles that even peaceful protests right now are the target, being targeted by this administration. It is a very dangerous moment for American democracy. So it’s our hope that Americans everywhere will rise up and resist."

"I think the message is that many in the American public are not going to stand for this. We’re not going stand for a king, we’re not going to stand for a fascist, authoritarian leader and that’s what all of this is about. And we’ll stand together with each other and say that over and over again."

STORYLINE:
Hundreds joined a rally in Paris on Saturday as part of the "No Kings" demonstrations against US President Donald Trump being held across more than 2,000 locations.

The crowd, including many American nationals, gathered in the French capital’s Place de la Bastille carrying signs and banners.

Organizers also set up an inflatable caricature of Trump as a golden-maned chicken in a prison jumpsuit, standing behind bars.

The demonstrations come on the heels of protests that flared up across the U.S over federal immigration enforcement raids that began last week and Trump ordering the National Guard and Marines to Los Angeles, where protesters blocked a freeway and set cars on fire.

Ada Shen, who helped organize the Paris "No Kings" rally, said the U.S. was facing a "very dangerous moment".

The 50501 Movement, standing for 50 states, 50 protests, one movement, has been orchestrating the protests and says it picked the “No Kings” name to support democracy and speak out against what they call the authoritarian actions of the Trump administration.

Eva Coffey, a U.S. citizen who moved to Paris with her family a week ago, echoed that sentiment saying demonstrators would be willing to say it "over and over again".
