STORYLINE:
Residents of Tel Aviv expressed mixed reactions Saturday to an Iranian retaliatory attack on Israel, with differing views on how the conflict is affecting their daily lives.
David, a resident of Tel Aviv, expressed strong support for Israel’s military action.
"We must continue our mission, and eliminate those who we need to, and do whatever is necessary. Nothing will deter us," he said, standing near a building that was hit by an Iranian attack overnight.
On the other hand Erez, who rode his bicycle past the attack site on Saturday morning, voiced frustration and sorrow.
"I hoped none of this would happen. Not to us and not to them," he told The Associated Press.
"These ballistic missiles and the missiles that (U.S. President, Donald) Trump is sending us, it is not worth the money that American taxpayers pay. It is not worth the danger to our soldiers, everyone wants to live in peace," he added.
Iran launched retaliatory missile strikes on Israel into Saturday morning, killing at least three people and wounding dozens, after a series of blistering Israeli attacks on the heart of Iran’s nuclear program and its armed forces.
Israel’s assault used warplanes, as well as drones smuggled into the country in advance, to assault key facilities and kill top generals and scientists.
Iran’s U.N. ambassador said 78 people were killed and more than 320 wounded in the attacks.
Israel said the barrage was necessary before Iran got any closer to building an atomic weapon, although experts and the U.S. government have assessed that Tehran was not actively working on such a weapon before the strikes.
It also threw talks between the United States and Iran over an atomic accord into disarray days before the two sides were set to meet Sunday.
