STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Chileans took to the streets of Santiago on Saturday afternoon to show support and solidarity with the Palestinian people and the Global March to Gaza campaign.

The demonstrators gathered in front of the Manuel Montt Metro station and marched to the Padlocks Bridge, where they hung flags.

Chile is home to the largest Palestinian community outside the Arab world—descendants of various diasporas that began arriving at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

At the end of May, the Chilean government notified Israeli authorities of the withdrawal of its military attachés from the embassy in Tel Aviv, citing the “serious humanitarian situation” faced by the Palestinian population in Gaza due to what it described as a “disproportionate and indiscriminate” military operation by the Israeli army.

Egypt blocked activists from participating in a planned march to Gaza on Friday, halting their attempt to reach the border and challenge Israel’s blockade on humanitarian aid to the Palestinian territory before it could begin.

An Egyptian official said that more than three dozen activists—mostly carrying European passports—had been deported upon arrival at Cairo International Airport over the past two days.

The Global March to Gaza is the latest civil society effort pressing for the entry of food, fuel, medical supplies, and other aid into Gaza.
