"For many airlines it’s a 20-year decision. They’re going to stake their business success to a product that they will operate for 20 years and so it’s paramount importance that the efficiency of the product is there. And so certainly beyond fuel burn, it’s the maintenance efficiency of the airframe and the engine, it’s the operational efficiency of the aeroplane in terms of how well does this integrate with my fleet, my existing flight crews, what kind of training burden do I take on to bring this aeroplane in? So the cascading effects of a product decision are enormous for an airline."

"At some point in the next 50 years, we will see enormous technology changes in the industry, but we are not quite there yet in terms of, for example, perhaps an all-electric aeroplane or hydrogen-powered aeroplane or some significant step change in the way aeroplanes function."

“So when customers are buying new aircraft of course they’re looking for efficiency, to have the right economics but also the right sustainability credentials, lower CO2. They’re looking for the right capacity of aircraft but also the right passenger experience product because of course that’s what their customers, the passengers, see. And they’re also looking, for example, for range capability to be able to serve the destinations that they would like to be able to offer to their passengers.

“We’re already exploring different technology access, new engine technology for example, new aerodynamic technology, new materials – lighter, more sustainable, new system configurations to prepare the next generation of aircraft, but that’s still a while away. We would see that probably potentially in the second half of the next decade but we are preparing the ground in terms of technology.”

“In normal times it’s pretty easy, because you’re working closely with your customers to define the product correctly and build something they want to purchase. Now the complication here is that building these aircraft has become a major challenge, given supply chain limits and other production issues. Tariffs don’t make that any easier.”
