"We just can’t continue to have this kind of violent talk, I worry for people wanting to even participate in government. I mean I have friends who get approached all the time to run for office and people don’t just have to think about am I willing to do the work and am I up for the challenge? They have to think about am I willing to put my family at risk ? Am I willing to put myself at risk? And that’s just crazy we should not have to live like this ."

STORYLINE:
On Sunday morning, flowers, candles, and handwritten notes lined the steps of the Minnesota State Capitol. They paid homage to former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, who were killed in their Brooklyn Park home early Saturday.
After placing a flower at the site, Sara Dotti took a moment standing in silence to commemorate the former state House speaker. Dotti didn’t know Hortman personally, she said, but she respected her a lot.
It brought tears to Dotti’s eyes when she thought about what the state of the nation, saying she felt "helpless" because "it’s scary right now in our country." Public officials who give to their communities deserve to be protected, the longtime public school teacher said.
"I just, I wanted her to know that she mattered and we care," Dotti said shakily.
Vance Boelter, the man suspected of fatally shooting former Democratic House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, in their home early Saturday in the northern Minneapolis suburbs, was arrested Sunday. He is charged with two counts of murder and two of attempted murder.
