STORYLINE:
Demonstrators took to the streets of Brazil’s largest city São Paulo on Sunday, to urge Brazil’s president to sever diplomatic ties with Israel.
Protesters carried Palestinian flags and played the drums, while others held posters and banners calling for a boycott of Israel.
Another group held a large banner reading "Show Israel the Red Card."
Among those demonstrating was Thiago Avilla, the Brazilian activist who was detained by Israeli forces on board of the Freedom Flotilla last week while trying to break the siege and deliver aid in Gaza.
"Now is the time for the world to defeat Zionism, put an end to the genocide against the Palestinian people, and build a new society in its place — one that is fairer and more equal," said Thiago Ávila.
President Lula da Silva has been a frequent critic of Israel’s offensive in Gaza, which he has compared to the Holocaust.
