3. SOUNDBITE (English) Chris Singleton, son of church shooting victim:
"As I’m here today talking about hope. Talking about resilience, talking about remembering my mom, the 8 others and the survivors. From this massacre that happened right below my feet. I’m hopeful that we can teach love and remind people. That we didn’t choose our skin color. We didn’t choose our first language. We didn’t choose where we were born or who we were born to. So I will never hate you for those things and hopefully you never hate me for them just as well. Thank you so much."
4. Mid of attendees embracing during the Charleston church shooting anniversary event.
5. SOUNDBITE (English) Sen. Mark Kelly, (D) Arizona:
"A place of worship must be a safe place. It must be a sanctuary, both spiritually and physically. A place where everyone from civil rights leaders to presidents to a Sunday regular can find love, hope, and strength."
6. Mid of congregation standing and holding papers during church service in Charleston on the anniversary of the shooting.
7. SOUNDBITE (English) Marvin Stewart, Mother Emanuel AME member:
"The memories of the Emanuel nine, they are close and dear to my heart, and of course, I knew so many of them on a personal level, and unfortunately, I went to five out of nine funerals. So I also consider myself a survivor."

9. Wide of congregation attending a memorial service.
10. SOUNDBITE (English) Mick Owens, Ohio resident:
"We wanted to be here even in the heat of Charleston instead of a different time of the year because of the 10 year anniversary here. So we’re gonna spend the week here in Charleston, wanna be here for Juneteenth and just want to enter into more deeply this experience of what AME Church has experienced and the people have suffered and how they have become survivors."
11. Wide of church shooting victims’s family members standing during the service.
12. SOUNDBITE (English) Marvin Stewart, Mother Emanuel AME member:
"I thought that the ceremony was beautiful, and the years passed by so quickly, it’s truly seemed like just yesterday. And outpouring support from the community, I think that’s one of the reasons why the bonding of the community and the congregation has really been very impressive and it sustained all of us because I think without the community support, supporting each other, it would be even more difficult than what we’re presently experiencing."

STORYLINE:
Mother Emanuel AME church in South Carolina marked 10 years since a racist shooting killed nine of its Black members by inviting a Pittsburgh synagogue where 11 were killed in an antisemitic shooting.

Leaders of both denominations said at Tuesday’s service that much more needs to be done to fight hatred in the U.S.

They lamented at times the country appears to have moved backward since the 2015 Charleston church massacre. But the leaders say if groups who are the center of hatred from others come together that they can overcome the country’s scary turn.
