(29 Jan 1995) As Russian troops again shelled the centre of Grozny on Sunday (29/1), hundreds of residents of the city and surrounding areas lost hope and abandoned their homes. In Chernorechye district, south of the city, many people packed up what they could carry and left the capital. Those who could afford to hire trucks took furniture and carpets, but most people simply carried bags and left on foot. In Moscow, meanwhile, more than 500 Communist supporters held a demonstration against the Chechen war. They
carried red flags and posters reading "Yeltsin — Killer" and "USSR – Peace for all Peoples."
