STORYLINE:
Thirty-two flights bound for Israel have been diverted to Cyprus since Israel launched its initial strikes on Iran late last week, Cyprus Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos said on Monday.

Dozens of Israeli aircraft are parked at Larnaca airport.

Kombos said the flights carried a total 2,600 passengers, some of whom have already departed for other destinations or have found accommodation in Cyprus.

The foreign minister said the governments of Portugal and Slovakia have formally asked the island nation to help in the repatriation of their citizens evacuated from at-risk areas amid the ongoing strikes and counter-strikes by Israel and Iran.

He said the two countries are in the process of evacuating their citizens and require assistance in bringing them back through Cyprus which is the nearest European Union country to Israel at 268 kilometers (167 miles).

Kombos said Cyprus have been receiving other informal requests from a number of countries about Cyprus’ ESTIA plan which provides brief accommodation of evacuated third country nationals prior to their repatriation.

Cyprus have acted as a transfer point for third-country evacuees following the Oct. 7 attack by the militant group Hamas.

In April of 2023, Cyprus also assisted in the repatriation of UK nationals from Sudan.
