1. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
"Two things: firstly, the president (US President Donald Trump) said a few minutes ago that discussions were underway, which is a good thing. And so, if the United States of America can secure a ceasefire, that’s a very good thing and France will support it, and we hope they do."

2. SOUNDBITE (French) Emmanuel Macron, French President:
"And once a ceasefire is secured, I think the announcements made by President Trump are entirely positive, and the role that the United States of America will have to play is key. The French, alongside the British and Germans, are available to renew serious discussions, discussions that we never stopped."

STORYLINE:
French President Emmanuel Macron on Monday said it was "entirely positive" that President Donald Trump was to leave the Group of Seven summit a day early, as efforts to de-escalate the conflict between Israel and Iran continued.

The U.S. said Trump planned to skip a series of Tuesday meetings that would address the ongoing war in Ukraine and global trade issues.

Macron told reporters after meeting the U.S. president that he was told that discussions to ease the standoff between Israel and Iran were under way and added that “if the United States of America can secure a ceasefire,” France would support it.

He added that the role the U.S. played was "key.”

World leaders had gathered in Canada with the specific goal of helping to defuse a series of global pressure points.

But their summit was disrupted by a showdown over Iran’s nuclear program when Israel launched aerial bombardment campaign against Iran.
