STORYLINE:
Iranian missiles launched towards Israel are forcing Israelis to dash for the shelters every few hours.
In one public shelter in Jaffa, a mixed Arab-Jewish neighborhood of Tel Aviv, two Cuban salsa teachers put some music on and offered an impromptu show in front of more than 100 people and 15 dogs.
“We’re stuck in here anyways, so is it OK if we bring up the energy a bit?” asked Tav Golan, a dance teacher who teaches in the nearby city of Rishon Lezion.
He started some salsa music on a portable speaker and grabbed the hand of fellow dance teacher Anna Kaniel.
Since 1993, all new homes in Israel must be built with a “safe room” or reinforced room meant to withstand a rocket attack.
But many older neighborhoods still make do with public shelters, often built underneath city parks, schools, or parking garages.
Inside these dusty underground rooms, a wide cross section of neighborhoods crush into the rooms together many times a day.
It comes as Israel claimed on Tuesday to have killed a top Iranian general as it traded more strikes with its longtime foe.
President Donald Trump warned residents of Tehran to evacuate while suggesting that the United States could give up on negotiations.
Israel says its sweeping assault on Iran’s top military leaders, nuclear scientists, uranium enrichment sites and ballistic missile program is necessary to prevent its adversary from getting any closer to building an atomic weapon.
The strikes have killed at least 224 people in Iran.
Iran has retaliated by launching some 400 missiles and hundreds of drones at Israel. So far, 24 people have been killed in Israel.
