Tokyo braces for heatwave as heatstroke warnings issued in many parts of Japan

STORYLINE:
Tokyo residents were seen equipped with parasols, portable fans and bottled drinks in hand on Wednesday as the Japanese Meteorological Agency issued heatstroke advisories across Japan.

High temperatures hit western Japan, including in Tajima City in Gifu prefecture,e where it had reached 37.6 degrees Celsius (99.68 Fahrenheit).

In Tokyo, the temperature reached nearly 35 degrees Celsius (95 Fahrenheit) — unusually high for this time of the year, as residents adjusted to the intense summer heat.

“I’m pretty much treating it like it’s August right now,” said Megan LaPoint, a teacher at an international school in Tokyo.

According to the Tokyo Fire Department, more than 50 people were sent to hospital due to heatstrokes on Wednesday.

One person died from a heatstroke in the nearby Kanagawa prefecture, according to local authorities.
