“We are on the eve of Juneteenth and it’s a very exciting and special time here in Philadelphia and especially at the museum. Our current exhibitions, we have Demond Melancon, a piece of New Orleans coming to the museum. Yeah he’s known as Big Chief Demond around his official title. And so we had the chance to experience Black Masking which is rarely seen outside of New Orleans. It’s a century-old practice that involves teeny-tiny, meticulous beadwork, very small beads that are used to make these elaborate suits that are worn on Mardi Gras morning by the Black Maskers."
6. Various of an exhibition called “Africa”, 2011

7. SOUNDBITE (English) Dejay Duckett, African American Museum of Philadelphia:
“But this one is really steeped in African history. It’s inspired by Shaka Zulu, it’s inspired By Haile Selassie, the Ethiopian leader. So, his work really has this element of storytelling within textile. This exhibition is about freedom, it’s about freedom fighters, not just in Philadelphia or even within the United States. But throughout the diaspora. So, it really reflects Juneteenth and having that freedom."

STORYLINE:
African American Museum in Philadelphia is joining people across the U.S to commemorate the end to slavery. Now in its fifth year, the museum will have a series of events with a block party and featured exhibitions.
A major highlight is the exhibition Demond Melancon: As Any Means Are Necessary. In it, the artist uses intricate, hand-sewn beadwork to transform Mardi Gras suits into narrative canvases that depict heroes, legends, and warriors from different cultures.
Juneteenth has been celebrated by Black Americans for generations, but became more widely celebrated after former President Joe Biden designated it a federal holiday in 2021.
