STORYLINE:
Hundreds of Israelis stranded in Cyprus have boarded a cruise ship that will return them to their homeland.
The Israeli cruise ship Crown Iris embarked Thursday on the trip of about 270 kilometers to Israel with some of the travellers who have been stranded there by fighting between Israel and Iran in the past week.
Approximately 6,500 Israelis were in Cyprus after being diverted to the east Mediterranean island, the closest European nation to Israel, or travelled there voluntarily in hopes of catching a flight or boat trip back to Israel, according to Cyprus’s chief Rabbi.
Cyprus has become a key transit point for the repatriation of third-country nationals fleeing conflict areas in the region, as well as Israelis and others wishing to return home in the absence of direct flights there.
The open conflict sparked by Israel’s sudden barrage of attacks against Iran’s nuclear and military structure shows no signs of abating on the seventh day of hostilities between the two longtime foes that threatens to spiral into a wider, more dangerous regional war.
An Iranian missile hit a hospital in southern Israel early Thursday, while others struck an apartment building in Tel Aviv and other sites in central Israel, wounding at least 40 people.
