STORYLINE:
The lawyer of Colombian Senator Miguel Uribe, who was shot in the head earlier in June, said the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) had requested information about the attack and his security.

Lawyer Victor Mosquera said he received a letter from the IACHR in which the regional organization requested precautionary measures to the Colombian government to ensure Uribe’s security.

Mosquera said the letter also asks how Uribe’s security failed to prevent the attack.

Maria Claudia Tarazona, the wife of Uribe, thanked supporters who had prayed for his health and said he "has the strength to continue fighting."

Uribe, a conservative presidential hopeful, was shot earlier in the month as he addressed a small crowd of people who had gathered at a park in Bogota’s Modelia neighborhood.

The Associated Press requested information from the IACHR regarding the petition.

The family had already made a complaint against the National Protection Unit, which they claim failed to comply with 23 requests to provide him with a larger security team.

Colombian President Gustavo Petro also said that the number of bodyguards was "strangely" reduced from seven to three on the day of the attack.

Since the attack took place, the government has assigned more protection to opposition precandidates who are campaigning for the 2026 presidential elections.
