STORYLINE:
A candlelight vigil in remembrance of former Minnesota House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark Hortman, was held Wednesday evening on the steps of the State Capitol in St. Paul.
Hortman and her husband, Mark, were fatally shot in their home early Saturday morning by a man posing as a police officer in the Minneapolis suburb of Brooklyn Center.
Hortman had served as the top House Democratic leader since 2017, and six years as speaker, starting in 2019. Under a power-sharing deal after the 2024 election left the House tied, her title became speaker emerita and Republican Rep. Lisa Demuth became speaker.
Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and his wife, Gwen Walz, attended the vigil, joining mourners in singing “Amazing Grace,” holding candles, and leaving flowers at a makeshift memorial.
The man charged in federal and state court with killing them, Vance Boelter, is also accused of shooting another Democratic lawmaker, Sen. John Hoffman, and his wife, Yvette, at their home a few miles away in Champlin. They survived and are recovering. Boelter’s attorneys have declined to comment on the charges
The Hortmans were alumni of the University of Minnesota, which scheduled a midday memorial gathering on the Minneapolis campus. The university said the event was to offer space “to acknowledge our shared grief, honor those who serve in public life, and reaffirm our collective commitment to leadership grounded in compassion, dialogue, and democracy.”
Melissa Hortman earned a law degree from the university in 1995, while Mark Hortman earned an MBA there in 2011.
Vance Boelter, 57, faces federal murder and stalking charges related to the Hortmans’ deaths.
Authorities say he also shot and wounded state Sen. John Hoffman, a Democrat, and his wife, Yvette, at their home in a nearby neighborhood that same morning.
They also said he visited the homes of two other state legislators but did not encounter them.
Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson revealed Monday at a news conference allegations that Boelter had dozens of other Democrats as potential targets, including officials in other states.
