STORYLINE:
Thousands of members of the Argentine opposition gathered Wednesday in support of former President Cristina Fernández, who is serving a six-year corruption sentence under house arrest.
The protest gathered sympathizers of the Peronist party, trade unionists, and members of social organizations.
As the protest gained momentum, Fernández announced on X (formerly Twitter) that she had asked the court that convicted her in 2022 to clarify whether the house arrest, which began the day before, includes a ban on her going out onto her apartment balcony to greet and interact with her supporters.
She had done this repeatedly since the Supreme Court ratified her sentence last week.
Kirchnerism, the center-left sector of Peronism that looks to Fernández as a leader, was the most vocal at the protest against what it considers a political disqualification of the former vice president (2019-2023).
She will not be able to run as a provincial deputy candidate in the September elections in the province of Buenos Aires, as the sentence also includes a perpetual disqualification from holding public office.
Unions affiliated with Peronism—the main opposition force—and combative leftist social groups also took to the streets to converge later in the central Plaza de Mayo.
Fernández maintains that her conviction is unfounded and schemed by conservative sectors to remove her from the political scene.
The sentence that convicted her was ratified in 2024 by the main criminal appeals court and last week by the Supreme Court, the country’s highest court.
